The first trailer for Mary Shelley has arrived. Frankenstein is one of the most important books ever written, especially for those who are fans of anything monster related. While the mad scientist and his horrific creation have been brought to the screen many times before, this new movie tells the tale of the author and how she became inspired to write Frankenstein.
Appropriately, this trailer for Mary Shelley has arrived on Friday the 13th, a day generally associated with creepy things. The movie takes a look at the torrid real tale of how a passionate and risque love affair fueled the creation of the trailblazing writers' gothic masterwork. The trailer itself has a very gothic look to it. Sort of like a toned-down Tim Burton movie, which seems fitting, given that this takes place in the 1800s and leads us to the creation of Frankenstein. Elle Fanning (20th Century Women) stars as the titular author. Fanning has definitely proven herself as one of the finest young actresses working in Hollywood today, so that's a good place to start when telling a story like this.
Mary Shelley tells the story of the iconic writer. Raised by a renowned philosopher father (Stephen Dillane) in 18th-century London, Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin (Elle Fanning) is a teenage dreamer determined to make her mark on the world when she meets the dashing and brilliant poet Percy Shelley (Douglas Booth). So begins a steamy, bohemian love affair marked by both passion and personal tragedy that will transform Mary and fuel the writing of Frankenstein. Imbued with the imaginative spirit of its heroine, Mary Shelley brings to life the world of a trailblazing woman who defied convention and channeled her innermost demons into a legend for the ages.
The movie comes from director Haifaa Al-Mansour, who also co-write the script with Emma Jensen. While Al-Mansour doesn't have a ton of experience with narrative features, having a female director's perspective on a movie like this seems absolutely necessary. As we see in the trailer, the early 1800s was not a period of time that was kind to ambitious women, but Mary Shelley pressed on anyway and published Frankenstein, initially anonymously in 1818, which is one of the most iconic works of literature ever. She's an icon of female empowerment and it seems fitting that a woman gets to tell her story.
IFC Films will release Mary Shelley in theaters in New York and Los Angeles on May 25, with the movie hitting VOD and digital platforms on June 1. So, if you want to see this in a theater, you may have to hope that it gets some sort of expanded, limited run if you don't live in LA or New York City. Bel Powley, Joanne Froggatt, Tom Sturridge and Game of Thrones' Maisie Williams also star in the movie, which is produced by Amy Baer, Alan Moloney and Ruth Coady.
